Discover Hoeselt

Hoeselt is a charming place with a rich past. It is known for its fertile land and historical connections.

A Look Back in Time

Hoeselt has a long and interesting history. It is located close to Tongeren, a very old city with Roman roots. Because of this, many signs of the ancient Roman Empire have been found in Hoeselt's rich soil.

In 1066, the village of Hoeselt came under the care of a place called Hoei. Back then, it was known as Housle. This name came from the words hus and lo, which meant "house by the forest." The forests around Hoeselt were later cleared for farming in the 12th and 13th centuries.

Later, Hoeselt became part of the Frankish Kingdom. After that, its land came under the rule of the Bishop of Liège.

The old center of Hoeselt has a special triangular shape. It also has a motheuvel, which is a motte hill. Both of these features show the influence of its Frankish past. A motte hill was a raised earth mound where a castle or tower was built for defense.

Hoeselt Today

Today, Hoeselt is a modern municipality. It is led by a mayor, Werner Raskin. The local government is formed by a group of political parties working together.
