Holbrook's Past: A Look at History
Holbrook likely got its name from a stream. People called this stream either "Old Brook" or "Hollow Brook."
Long ago, Holbrook was part of a huge piece of land. This land was called the Islip Grange estate. William Nicoll bought this 51,000-acre estate in 1697. He was the son of Matthias Nicoll, who was once the mayor of New York City.
For many years, Holbrook was mostly farmland. In 1844, the Long Island Rail Road reached the area. This made it easier for people to travel here. Then, in 1848, a man named Alexander McCotter bought 5,000 acres. He planned out the community, making it ready for more people to move in.
The oldest building still standing from that time is St. John's Lutheran Church. It was built in 1863. Later, in 1875, a cigar factory opened near the train station.
Holbrook started to grow much faster in the mid-1900s. In 1931, only 321 people lived there. By 1965, the population grew to 2,500. Just ten years later, in 1975, it jumped to 15,000 people! This big growth happened after the Long Island Expressway was built in 1969. The Long Island MacArthur Airport also grew, bringing more people to the area.
