Park History

Hollenbeck Park has been a green and welcoming place for the community since 1892. The park was named after John Edward Hollenbeck, who was an important person in Los Angeles. He founded the First National Bank. After he passed away, his wife, along with former Los Angeles Mayor William H. Workman, generously donated 21 acres (about 85,000 square meters) of land to create this park.

In May 1929, a famous comedy film called Men O' War was filmed right here at Hollenbeck Park! This movie starred the hilarious duo Laurel and Hardy. Back then, visitors could even rent boats to use on the lake.

Later, in the 1950s, the Golden State Freeway was built right next to the park's western side. Even with the freeway nearby, Hollenbeck Park remains a cherished green space for everyone to enjoy.
