Holm of Grimbister is a small, special island in Scotland. It's called a tidal islet because it's connected to the bigger island of Mainland Orkney by a path that appears at low tide. This path is called a causeway. You can find Holm of Grimbister in the Bay of Firth, close to a village called Finstown.
Exploring Holm of Grimbister's Location
Holm of Grimbister is located in the Bay of Firth. This bay is an inlet of a larger body of water called the Wide Firth, which lies to the north. Another small island, Damsay, is also in the Bay of Firth, to the northeast of Holm of Grimbister.
The causeway from Holm of Grimbister connects to the mainland at a spot called Holm Point. This is just north of a mainland area named Grimbister. The island is also used for farming.
Who Lives on Holm of Grimbister?
Holm of Grimbister is an inhabited island, meaning people live there. In 2007, a person living on the island was a candidate for the Scottish Parliamentary Elections. This means they were hoping to be chosen to represent the area in the Scottish Parliament.
Even though people lived there in 2007, the official count in 2001 did not list it as inhabited. However, by March 2010, news reports confirmed that at least two people lived on the island. The official census in 2011 recorded the population as three people. In 2016, the island was put up for sale for £300,000.
