Holmsund is a cool place in Sweden, located in Umeå Municipality in Västerbotten County. In 2010, about 5,489 people lived there. It's found about 18 kilometers south of the city of Umeå. Holmsund is super important because it acts as Umeå's main port!

Where is Holmsund Located?

Holmsund is right at the spot where the Ume River flows into the sea. Across the river to the west is a town called Obbola. These two towns are connected by the E12 road, which crosses the river on the Obbola Bridge. Both Holmsund and Obbola are known for their wood and paper factories. From the southern part of Holmsund, you can even catch a ferry to Vaasa, a port city in Finland!

Holmsund's Past: A Sawmill Story

Did you know that in the past, sawmills in Sweden used water power? But then, in 1849, steam power came along and changed everything! The biggest water-powered sawmill was in a place called Baggböle. It was one of the last to close down in 1884. This happened because Holmsund built a new sawmill that used steam power. This new technology helped Swedish wood become a huge export around the world!
