Västerbotten is a historical province located in northern Sweden. It is part of the larger region called Norrland. This area is known for its beautiful nature and rich history.

Västerbotten is also the name of a modern county, Västerbotten County, which covers a similar area. The province is quite large, covering about 15,093 square kilometers. In 2009, about 210,679 people lived there.

A Look at Västerbotten's Past

Västerbotten has a long and interesting history. It was once much larger than it is today.

Changing Borders Over Time

Before the Finnish War (a conflict between Sweden and Russia) in 1808-1809, Västerbotten included parts of what is now Finnish Lapland. After the war, Sweden lost these eastern areas to Russia. This changed the borders of Västerbotten to what they are mostly today.

Nature and Wildlife in Västerbotten

Västerbotten is home to many different plants and animals. Each province in Sweden has its own special symbols from nature.

Provincial Symbols
