How Umeå Municipality is Managed
Umeå Municipality is an area with clear borders. It includes the city of Umeå and a large area around it. This municipality was formed by joining many smaller local areas between 1952 and 1974.
The municipality is run by a group of 65 people called the municipal assembly. These members are chosen by the people in an election every four years. The assembly then picks a smaller group of 9 people to be the executive committee. They also choose 7 special leaders called municipal commissioners.
These groups are led by a chairman. Since 1996, Lennart Holmlund, from the Social Democrat party, has been the chairman. After the 2010 local election, the municipality has been led by a group made of the Social Democratic party and the Left Party.
