Where is Holy Cross?
Holy Cross is located in eastern Iowa. It is about 4 miles (6.4 km) east of Luxemburg. The city is also about 25 miles (40 km) northwest of Dubuque.
The city covers a total area of about 0.34 square miles (0.85 square kilometers). All of this area is land, with no large bodies of water.
A Look at Holy Cross's Past
How Holy Cross Got Its Name
In the early 1800s, people from Ireland and Germany settled in this area. The community was first called Pin Oak in 1844. This name came from the many pin oak trees that grew nearby. There was also a local post office with the same name.
In 1855, the town's name changed to Georgetown. This was to honor George Gallon, who gave some of his land for the town to grow. Finally, in 1898, the name was changed again to Holy Cross.
The 2004 Storm
On May 17, 2004, strong storms hit the area. Several buildings in Holy Cross were damaged. The Holy Cross Catholic Church was hit especially hard. Part of its roof was torn off, and the inside got wet from the rain. After the storm, the church was repaired with a new roof and fixed interior.

The Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery is located just north of the Holy Cross Catholic Church. By 2013, more than 1,700 people had been buried there.
