The Cathedral of the Holy Family is a special Roman Catholic church called a cathedral. It is located in the University Heights area of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. This important building is right next to St. Joseph High School.

Building a New Cathedral

Why a New Church?

The old church, St. Paul's Cathedral, was getting too small. It couldn't hold all the people who wanted to attend. Because of this, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saskatoon decided to build a brand new, bigger cathedral.

Construction and Opening

Work on the Cathedral of the Holy Family began in 2010. It cost about CA$28.5 million to build. The church is very large, covering about 65,000 square feet (6,039 square meters). It officially opened its doors on December 18, 2011.

What's Inside the Cathedral?

Space for Everyone

The main part of the church can seat 1,200 people. There's also an extra area that can be used for overflow. This means up to 2,000 people can be inside for big events.

More Than Just a Church

This building is used for many different things. It serves as a regular church for local people. It's also the main cathedral for the entire diocese. Plus, it has offices, a library, and places for meetings. It can even be used for banquets and community events.

Modern Design

The cathedral has a modern design. It looks like buildings from the late 1950s or 1960s. This style was seen as very futuristic back then.

Special Features

Solar-Powered Stained Glass

One of the coolest things about the Cathedral of the Holy Family is its stained glass windows. Some of these windows have tiny solar panels built into them! This was a very new idea when the church was built.

Green Energy First

This makes the Cathedral of the Holy Family the first church in North America to use solar cells in its stained glass. There are 1,000 solar cells in total. They are spread across 54 special window panels. This helps the church use clean, renewable energy.
