Holy Rood Church in Ossington, Nottinghamshire, is a beautiful old church. It's part of the Church of England. This church is very special because it's listed as a Grade I building. This means it's super important for its history and amazing architecture!

A Look Back in Time

Holy Rood Church was built a long time ago, between 1782 and 1783. A famous architect named John Carr from York designed it.

The church is thought to be built on or very near a much older site. This site was once home to Ossington Preceptory. This was a kind of monastery for the Knights Hospitallers. They were a group of knights who helped sick people and protected pilgrims. Their monastery was closed down in 1534 by King Henry VIII. This was part of a big event called the dissolution of the monasteries.

The Church Organ

This church has a very old and special musical instrument. It's a barrel organ made by a company called Robson around 1830.

This organ is so important that it has been given a Historic Organ Certificate. This award comes from the British Institute of Organ Studies. They have even given it a Grade I listing, just like the church building itself! You can find more details about this unique organ online at the National Pipe Organ Register.

What is a Parish?
