Holy Trinity (El Greco) facts for kids
Holy Trinity is a famous painting made by the artist El Greco around 1577 to 1579. It's an oil painting on canvas. This artwork was one of nine pieces El Greco created for the Abbey of Santo Domingo de Silos in Spain.
Later, in 1832, Ferdinand VII of Spain, who was the king at the time, bought the painting. He got it from a sculptor named Valeriano Salvatierra. Today, you can see this amazing painting at the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain.
What the Painting Shows
The painting shows a very important scene from Christian beliefs. It features God the Father holding the dead body of God the Son. Above them, you can see a dove, which represents the Holy Spirit. Together, these three figures are known as the Holy Trinity.
El Greco's Artistic Style
El Greco was a unique artist, but he learned from many masters. When he painted the people in Holy Trinity, their bodies look strong and well-defined. This style was influenced by the famous Italian artist Michelangelo.
El Greco also used colors in a special way, making them very bright and dramatic. This use of color reminds us of another Italian painter, Tintoretto. The way El Greco arranged the figures in the painting, called the composition, was inspired by the German artist Albrecht Dürer. So, El Greco combined ideas from different great artists to create his own amazing style.
