Discovering Holy Trinity Church

The Church's Beginning

Holy Trinity Church was built a long time ago, in 1832. A talented architect named Benjamin Bramble designed it.

A Special Location

This church has a very special spot right near the sea. It sits on a hill behind the Royal Yacht Squadron. This means it offers amazing views over the busy waters of the Solent. Sailors passing by can easily see its tall tower.

What the Church Looks Like

The church is built from yellow bricks found on the Isle of Wight. It has a Gothic style, which means it looks a bit like a castle with its strong walls and tower. The main part of the church, called the nave, is 100 feet long. Inside, it feels very open and bright because there are no pillars blocking the view.

A Church for Sailors

When the church was first opened, it was meant to be a special place for sailors and people who worked on the sea. Because of its location and purpose, it quickly became popular with royalty and people who loved yachting. This connection has continued from the time of Queen Victoria right up to today.

Remembering Important Events

Inside the church, you can find special plaques that remember past members of the Royal Yacht Squadron. In the gardens, there is also a rock sculpture called the Fastnet Memorial. This memorial was put there to remember sailors who lost their lives in a big storm during the 1979 Fastnet yacht race.

A Protected Building

Holy Trinity Church is considered a very important building. It is a Grade II listed building, which means it is protected because of its history and special design. It was first given this protection in 1951.

The Church Organ

Holy Trinity Church has a large and impressive organ. It has three keyboards and was made by a company called Gray & Davison in 1884. You can find more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register website.
