A Special Church Building
Holy Trinity Church was built after a big event in history. In 1818, the government decided to spend a lot of money to celebrate defeating Napoleon. This church was one of many "Waterloo churches" built with that money.
The church has a unique look. Its entrance has four tall, grand columns. It also has a special tower called a lantern steeple. This steeple looks a bit like the one on St Pancras New Church, which is another building designed by John Soane.
Past Leaders and Burials
The first leader of Holy Trinity Church was George Saxby Penfold. He was called the Rector, which is like a main priest. He had done a similar job at another church in Marylebone before this one.
People used to be buried in the church's underground area, called a vault. The first burial happened in 1829. The last person buried there was Sir Jonathan Wathen Waller in 1853.
There's also a special outdoor pulpit facing Marylebone Road. A pulpit is where a speaker stands to give a sermon. This outdoor pulpit was built to remember Reverend William Cadman. He was the church's Rector from 1859 to 1891 and was known for his powerful voice and speeches.
What the Building is Used For Now
Over time, fewer people used Holy Trinity as a church. So, in 1936, it found a new purpose. It became a book warehouse for a new company called Penguin Books. They even used a children's slide to move books from the street down into the large basement!
In 1937, Penguin Books moved out. Then, another group called the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (SPCK) moved in. This group helps spread Christian teachings. They used the building as their main office until 2006.
Today, the building has changed again. In 2018, the ground floor and basement became "The Wedding Gallery." This was the world's first department store just for weddings! The first floor is now used for events and is known as "One Marylebone."
Location of the Church
The former Holy Trinity Church stands on its own, like an island. It's surrounded by busy streets. Marylebone Road is at the front. Albany Street and Osnaburgh Street are on its sides. Osnaburgh Terrace is the street at the back.
