Building the Church
In 1860, people in Sarn found it hard to get to their local churches. They were too far away. So, they asked Queen Victoria for help. She was the head of the Church of England at the time.
The people wanted a new church built closer to them. They also wanted to combine some smaller church areas into one bigger area. There was already a small church building nearby. It was called the Chapel of Llanfihangel.
The Queen agreed to their request. She made a special decision, called an Order-in-Council. This decision allowed Holy Trinity Church to be built. It would serve the people of Sarn. The church was built that same year, connected to the existing chapel. This created the new parish of Holy Trinity, Sarn.
Inside the Church
The inside of Holy Trinity Church has some interesting features.
Ancient Font
You can find a very old font inside the church. A font is a basin used for baptisms. This font dates all the way back to the 13th century! It came from the original Chapel of Llanfihangel.
Stained-Glass Windows
The church has beautiful stained-glass windows. Some of these windows show pictures of Jesus blessing children. Others show the ascension of Jesus, which is when Jesus went up to heaven. You can also see images of Saint George and Saint Michael in other windows.
The Organ
An organ was put into the church in 1931. At first, someone had to pump it by hand to make it work. Later, it was changed to run on electricity.
The Big Vote
Something very important happened in 1914. The British Parliament passed a law called the Welsh Church Act 1914. This law was going to separate the Church of England in Wales. It would create a new church called the Church in Wales.
Why the Vote Happened
The new law was delayed for a while. During this time, 19 church areas, including Sarn, had a special vote. This vote asked people if they wanted to stay with the Church of England or join the new Church in Wales. These areas were chosen because their church boundaries crossed the border between England and Wales.
Sarn's Decision
The people of Holy Trinity Church in Sarn voted. A total of 595 people voted to stay with the Church of England. Only 289 people voted to join the Church in Wales. Even though the church is located in Wales, the majority chose to remain with the Church of England.
Because of this vote, Holy Trinity Church left the Diocese of St Davids. That diocese became part of the Church in Wales. Instead, Holy Trinity Church became part of the Diocese of Hereford. This diocese is part of the Church of England.
