Why Holy Trinity Church Was Built
In 1860, people in Sarn lived far from their nearest churches. They needed a church closer to home. So, they asked Queen Victoria for help. She was the head of the Church of England at the time.
The people sent a special request, signed by important church leaders. They wanted to combine smaller church areas into one larger one. The request also mentioned that Sarn only had a small chapel. This chapel was called Chapel of Llanfihangel. It was a simple building used for church services.
Queen Victoria agreed to their request. She made an official order for Holy Trinity Church to be built. It would serve as a main church for the people of Sarn. The church was built that same year, connected to the old chapel.
Inside the Church
The inside of Holy Trinity Church holds some interesting history.
Ancient Font
You can find a very old font inside the church. A font is a basin used for baptisms. This one dates all the way back to the 13th century! It came from the original Chapel of Llanfihangel.
Beautiful Stained-Glass Windows
The church has lovely stained-glass windows. Some show pictures of Jesus blessing children. Others show the ascension of Jesus, which is when Christians believe Jesus went to heaven. You can also see images of Saint George and Saint Michael in other windows.
The Church Organ
The church organ was put in place in 1931. At first, someone had to pump it by hand to make it work. Later, it was changed to run on electricity.
The Big Vote of 1915
Something very important happened in 1914. The British Parliament passed a law called the Welsh Church Act 1914. This law meant that the Church of England in Wales would become a separate church. It would be called the Church in Wales.
But there was a delay before the law took full effect. During this time, 19 church areas, including Sarn, had a special vote. These areas were on the border between England and Wales. People were asked if they wanted to stay with the Church of England or join the new Church in Wales.
The people of Holy Trinity Church voted to stay with the Church of England. The vote was 595 to 289. Even though the church is in Wales, it chose to remain part of the Church of England. Because of this vote, Holy Trinity Church left the Diocese of St Davids. It then joined the Church of England's Diocese of Hereford.
