Who is The Hood?
The name "Hood" comes from the word "hoodlum," which means a bad person. The creators, Gerry Anderson and Sylvia Anderson, also said he often wore a mask, like a "hood."
The puppet used for the Hood had a very big head and hands. This made him look even more like a powerful villain. Over time, the Hood appeared less often in the original series.
The Hood's Story in the Movies
In the 2004 live-action movie, the Hood's reason for being bad was different. He was angry at Jeff Tracy, the leader of International Rescue. He felt Jeff left him to die during a rescue mission. The actor who played him, Ben Kingsley, said the Hood was "determined to make the hero look bad."
In the newer Thunderbirds Are Go! TV show, the story changed again. The Hood and Jeff Tracy used to be friends. But Jeff wouldn't let the Hood do his dangerous plans. This made the Hood turn against him.
The Hood's Appearances
In the TV Series
Nobody knows exactly where the Hood came from. We know he is the half-brother of Kyrano, who works for International Rescue. But we don't know if they share a mother or father, or who is older. His strange mind-control powers are also a mystery.
His real name is unknown in the TV show. He was called "Agent Seven-Nine" once and "671" another time. The name "The Hood" was only heard once, at the end of an episode. Most people learned his name from comics and other Thunderbirds stories.
The Hood is well-known among bad groups. He often works with spy agencies or armies. For example, he was hired to stop a new plane program in one episode.
He lives in a secret temple in the Malaysian jungle. It has an Aztec theme and lots of high-tech gear. He uses this equipment to watch his enemies and plan his evil schemes.
Hood's Plans to Steal Secrets
The Hood's main goal is to learn the secrets of the Thunderbirds machines. He often causes disasters to try and photograph them in action.
- He put a bomb on a new plane's first flight.
- He trapped actors in a cave.
- He even tried to sneak a tiny camera shaped like a mouse into Thunderbird 2. This happened after he caused a nuclear reactor to melt down.
But his plans always failed. International Rescue would stop him, or he would make a mistake. For example, the mouse camera was programmed to photograph movement. Instead of the controls, it took pictures of Lady Penelope screaming! She had joined the mission to see the action.
Hood's Temper and Mistakes
The Hood can come up with clever plans. He doesn't care if innocent people get hurt, as long as he gets what he wants. But he often gets angry easily. He is also very bad at thinking of new plans when his first one fails.
Once, he got footage of Thunderbirds 1 and 2. But when they chased him, he stole a plane he couldn't fly. The plane crashed, and the film was destroyed. This shows he couldn't adapt when things went wrong.
His pride also causes problems. When escaping, he crashed through a roadblock. He thought it was to stop him. But it was actually to stop people from driving over a damaged bridge!
The Tracy brothers never met the Hood face-to-face in the series. But they knew about him. They were sure he was the same person who had been after them since they started International Rescue. They believed they would catch him one day.
In the first Thunderbirds movie, Thunderbirds Are Go, the Hood was finally unmasked. This happened when he tried to sneak onto the new Zero-X spaceship. Lady Penelope shot down his helicopter, and he seemed to die. But fans know he often survived dangerous situations.
In the second movie, Thunderbird 6, there was a villain called "Black Phantom." People still debate if this was the Hood in disguise. The puppet looked like the Hood, but with hair. The voice was different. The director joked that Black Phantom was the "son of the Hood." But Sylvia Anderson said it was a different character.
In the Comics
In the Thunderbirds comics, the Hood's plans became even bolder. Sometimes, he even met the Tracy family directly.
- He once tried to bomb Thunderbird 2's hangar. This forced Virgil to move the craft onto the runway, where the Hood took photos.
- He managed to sneak onto Tracy Island. He almost mind-controlled John and Brains. But he was caught, and his memory was erased to keep the Tracy family's secret safe.
- Another time, he captured Brains by faking his own death. He wanted to use Brains' genius to attack Tracy Island. But Gordon rescued Brains, and the Hood was caught again, with his memory erased.
- He set up satellites to control Thunderbirds 1 and 2 remotely. But Thunderbird 1 escaped, and Thunderbird 3 destroyed his network.
- He even mind-controlled Kyrano to get him to Tracy Island. But the Tracys' security stopped him from getting into the Thunderbird hangars.

In the 2004 live-action film, the Hood's actions were more direct. He found Tracy Island and trapped Jeff Tracy and his four oldest sons on Thunderbird 5. Then, he stole Thunderbird 2 and the Mole machine. He used them to try and rob the Bank of England.
His powers also changed. He didn't seem to have mind-control anymore. Instead, he had powerful telekinetic abilities. This meant he could move objects with his mind. But using this power too much made him weak.
The film showed that the Hood was left for dead during an early International Rescue mission. He blamed Jeff Tracy. But Jeff told Alan that he couldn't save the Hood without both of them dying. Even after all the Hood did, Alan saved him from falling into the Mole's drills. This allowed the Hood to be captured.
In the film, his real name was revealed as Trangh Belagant. But everyone, including himself, called him "the Hood."

In the CGI 2015 series, the Hood had been secretly working against International Rescue for a while. The Tracy brothers only knew about him as a rumor. He is confirmed to be Kayo's uncle. Only Jeff and Grandma Tracy knew about Kayo's connection to him.
It's also hinted that the Hood caused Jeff Tracy's disappearance. Jeff was investigating the Hood before his ship vanished. Lady Penelope had found seven different fake names for the Hood before Jeff disappeared.
In this series, the Hood uses holographic projections for his disguises. In the first season finale, "Legacy," the Hood got onto Tracy Island. He took control of the Thunderbirds. He also told the Tracy brothers that he was Kayo's uncle. He tried to make them think Kayo was working for him. But Kayo tricked him into taking over Mateo Island instead of Tracy Island. Thunderbirds 1, 2, and 5 then destroyed his ship. He was captured by the Global Defence Force.
However, he escaped from prison later in the second season with help from the Mechanic. After a few more appearances, he allowed International Rescue to "rescue" him to escape the Mechanic's attack. Brains convinced the Mechanic to stop. The Hood then escaped again while being taken back to prison.
In the third season, the Hood created a new group called 'the Chaos Crew'. This brother and sister team, Fuse and Havoc, pilot their own advanced vehicles to cause trouble for International Rescue. This led to finding Jeff Tracy in space. The Hood was disguised as Brains, but Jeff saw through it. It was revealed that the Hood and Jeff used to be friends. But their friendship ended when Jeff stopped the Hood's dangerous plans. The Hood was then captured again and put under permanent arrest.
In the NES Game
In the Thunderbirds game for the NES, the Hood threatened to hit Earth with meteors. He said he would stop if the Tracy family gave him all their Thunderbird vehicles within 60 days. After the time was up, the family defeated him.
The Hood's Powers and Abilities
In the TV Series and Comics
In the original series, the Hood was a master of disguise. He used different masks to try and find out the Thunderbirds' secrets. He also had strange mind-control powers. These powers seemed to let him make people do simple things, like follow him or fall asleep.
He couldn't use his powers to get information from people. For example, he once tried to force Brains to tell him where a lost treasure was by burying him in sand. He didn't just mind-control him for the answer.
The only person he could get information from was Kyrano. He could make Kyrano tell him when International Rescue would be ready or where their base was. He often stood in front of a statue of Kyrano in his temple when he did this. He could also make Kyrano do things later, like turn off cameras before a rescue. Kyrano would feel pain but wouldn't remember being mind-controlled. He would just think he had "dizzy spells."
In the 2015 series, the Hood hasn't shown his mind-control powers. But he is still very clever with his plans. He has many helpers, a big flying machine, and the technology to cause earthquakes at the bottom of the ocean.
In the Film
In the 2004 film, the Hood's powers changed to telekinesis. This meant he could float and move things with his mind. He also briefly controlled Lady Penelope and Parker, which suggests he still had some mind-control abilities.
But using his powers too much made him weak. His niece, Tin-Tin (Vanessa Hudgens), also had these powers. She only used them to help her friends. She even managed to beat her uncle in a fight, especially when he was already weak from using his powers too much.
