However, this school eventually closed down as public education became more widely available. R.J. Matlock's daughter, Sara Stocks, continued her family's interest in education. She served on the Greene County School Board for many years.

Past Railroad Service
In the early 1900s, there was a railroad called the East Carolina Railroad. It was supposed to go from Tarboro to Kinston. However, it only reached Hookerton, ending just past the Contentnea Creek bridge. This railroad carried both people and goods. It stopped operating a long time ago.
