History of Hope Hull

Hope Hull has an interesting history. It used to be a stop on the Mobile and Montgomery Railroad. At first, it was called McGehee's Switch. This name honored a local farmer named Abner W. McGehee.

Later, McGehee changed the name to Hope Hull. He did this to honor Rev. Hope Hull. Rev. Hull was a Methodist preacher who traveled around to different churches. He was known as a "circuit rider." McGehee had met him in Georgia.

A post office opened in the area in 1875. It was first called McGehee's. In 1877, its name changed to Hope Hull.

Hope Hull is also home to Hooper Academy, a school. Another important place is the Tankersley Rosenwald School. This school is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
