Hope Island: A Special Place

Island History

Hope Island has a long and interesting past. Long ago, a Native American chief named Miantonomi from the Narragansett people gave the island to Roger Williams. Roger Williams was the person who started the state of Rhode Island.

The word "hope" is very important to Rhode Island. It's the state's motto and you can see it on the Rhode Island State Seal. Roger Williams chose this word because he was inspired by a Bible verse that says "hope is the anchor of the soul."

There's an old farm site on the west side of Hope Island from the 1700s. During World War II, the U.S. Navy used the island to store ammunition. You can still see some old ammunition bunkers and concrete roads from that time. The state of Rhode Island bought Hope Island in the early 1970s to protect it.

Home to Wildlife

Hope Island is a very special place for nature. It's part of the Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. This reserve helps protect important natural areas in the bay.

Many colonial wading birds come to Hope Island every spring and summer. They use the island as a safe place to build their nests and raise their young. These birds include herons and egrets, which are known for their long legs and graceful movements. Protecting Hope Island helps these birds thrive.

What is a Research Reserve?

A National Estuarine Research Reserve is like a special outdoor classroom and protected area. It's a place where scientists study estuaries. An estuary is where a river meets the sea, mixing fresh water with salt water. These areas are very important for many plants and animals, including fish, crabs, and birds. The reserve helps protect these habitats and teaches people about them.
