From Farmers to Wartime Use
Over time, Hope Island changed hands. It was once owned by a man named John Allen. Legend says he would walk to the island in winter when the bay froze over. Sadly, one winter, he had an unfortunate accident when the ice broke, and he later passed away.
In 1873, Hiram Aylsworth bought Hope Island. His family owned the land for many years. Later, during World War I, the U.S. Navy needed the island. They used it as a place to store ammunition. This was a very important job during the war. Hiram Aylsworth's grandson, Aylsworth Brown, loved spending his summers on Hope Island as a child. Years later, he bought land nearby and named his new home "Hopeview" in memory of his happy island memories.
There are still signs of the island's past. On the west side, you can find the remains of an 18th-century farm. This farm was likely built by Hiram Aylsworth.
