Horace Sunderlin Eldredge (born February 6, 1816 – died September 6, 1888) was an important early leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was part of a special group called the First Seven Presidents of the Seventy.

Early Life and New Beginnings

Horace Sunderlin Eldredge was born in a town called Brutus, New York, in 1816. When he was about 20 years old, in the summer of 1836, he was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

A year later, in the summer of 1837, he married Betsey Ann Chase in Buffalo, New York. They soon bought a farm in Far West, Missouri.

Moving to Missouri

At this time, many members of the Church were gathering in Missouri. However, they faced many challenges. Shortly after Horace and Betsey bought their farm, they were forced to leave Missouri. This happened because of a special order called the Missouri Executive Order 44. This order made all Latter-day Saints leave the state.

Journey West and New Responsibilities

After the death of Joseph Smith, the founder of the Church, Horace Eldredge joined other Church members on a long journey. They traveled west to what would later become the Utah Territory. This was a difficult trip, but they worked together to build new communities.

Once in Utah, Horace Eldredge took on many important roles. He was a trusted leader in the growing community.

Important Public Roles

Horace Eldredge was appointed as the marshal of the Utah Territory. This meant he was in charge of keeping law and order. He also worked as an assessor and collector of taxes, helping to manage the territory's money.

He was also a brigadier-general in the local militia. This was a group of citizens who helped protect the community.

Church Leadership

On October 7, 1854, Horace Eldredge received a significant calling in the Church. He was appointed as one of the Presidents of the Seventy. This was a very important leadership position. He served in this role for many years, until he passed away.

He also served in the Utah Territorial Legislature in 1856 and again in 1862. This was like being a lawmaker for the territory. He helped make decisions for the people of Utah.

Business Leadership

Horace Eldredge also played a key role in business. For several years before his death, he was the superintendent of ZCMI. ZCMI was a large department store and one of the first major businesses in Utah. It was very important for the economy of the early settlements.

Horace S. Eldredge passed away in Salt Lake City in 1888. He was 72 years old.
