Brutus is a small town located in Cayuga County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 4,311 people lived there. It is the town with the most people in Cayuga County. The town got its name from a clerk who liked classics, which are old Greek and Roman stories. The main court for the town is in Weedsport, which is the biggest village in Brutus.
Brutus is in the eastern part of Cayuga County. It is located west of a larger city called Syracuse.
History of Brutus
Brutus was once part of an area known as the Central New York Military Tract. This was land set aside for soldiers after the American Revolutionary War. The town of Brutus was officially created in 1802. It was formed from a larger town called Aurelius.
Geography of Brutus
The town of Brutus covers an area of about 58.3 square kilometers (22.5 square miles). Most of this area, about 57.3 square kilometers (22.1 square miles), is land. The rest, about 1.0 square kilometer (0.39 square miles), is water.
The eastern edge of Brutus borders Onondaga County. The northern border of the town is marked by the Seneca River and the Erie Canal. The New York State Thruway (Interstate 90), a major highway, runs through the northern part of the town. You can get onto the Thruway from Exit 40, which is near Weedsport.
Two important roads cross in Weedsport: New York State Route 31, which runs east-west, and New York State Route 34, which runs north-south.
