Weedsport is a small village in Cayuga County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 1,788 people lived there. The village got its name from Elihu and Edward Weed, who were merchants and helped start the village. Weedsport is located west of Syracuse. It used to be an important port on the Erie Canal. Whitford's Airport is just north of the village.

History of Weedsport
Weedsport has a long history. It was once part of the Central New York Military Tract. The village was first called "Weed's Basin." This was because it had a special basin, or boat turnaround, during the time of the Erie Canal. Later, its name was changed to Weedsport.
During the Erie Canal era, Weedsport and the nearby village of Port Byron were rivals. They both wanted to be the main entry port for the city of Auburn. This competition continued until both villages faced financial problems when their ports closed. Even today, a friendly rivalry exists between them, especially in local sports.
The village of Weedsport officially became a village in 1831.
Weedsport Schools and Landmarks
Weedsport Elementary School was built in 1908. It was updated in 1986 with more classrooms, a gym, and a home economics area. Weedsport Junior/Senior High School was built in 1957. It was expanded in 1967 and again in 2005.
Several important buildings in Weedsport are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Centreport Aqueduct (listed in 2000), the First Baptist Church of Weedsport (2002), the Orrin W. Burritt House (2007), and the Frank and Eliza Tryon House (2014).

Weedsport is located at 43°3′N 76°34′W / 43.050°N 76.567°W. The village covers an area of about 2.53 square kilometers (0.98 square miles), and all of it is land.
Transportation in Weedsport
Two main roads, New York State Route 31 and New York State Route 34, meet in Weedsport. The New York State Thruway (a major highway) passes just north of the village. You can get to it from Exit 40. The Erie Canal used to go through Weedsport. Now, it follows the Seneca River, which is about one mile north of the village.
