Aurelius is a town in Cayuga County, New York, United States. It is located in the western part of the county. In 2020, about 2,610 people lived there.
The town got its name from the famous Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius. It shares a border with the city of Auburn.

History of Aurelius
Early Days and Settlers
In 1779, a military group called the Sullivan Expedition traveled through this area. They were on a mission to destroy villages belonging to the Cayuga people.
Later, this land became part of the Central New York Military Tract. This was land given to New York soldiers who fought in the War for Independence. It was a way to thank them for their service.
The first European-American settler arrived in 1789. However, it's likely that other people had already made homes here. These lands originally belonged to the native Iroquois people.
Town Formation and Growth
The town of Aurelius was officially formed in 1789. It was already an established area when Cayuga County was created in 1799. Cayuga County was formed from parts of Onondaga County.
The city of Auburn was later created from a part of Aurelius. Auburn became a village in 1815 and a city in 1848. The western edge of Auburn still touches the town of Aurelius.
Famous People from Aurelius
Aurelius is known for a few important people. One was Birdsill Holley, a famous inventor. Another was Miriam Angeline Works. She was the first wife of Brigham Young. He led the "Latter-Day Saints" to the Great Salt Lake Valley in 1847.

Aurelius covers a total area of about 82.9 square kilometers (31.99 square miles). Most of this area is land, about 78.3 square kilometers (30.25 square miles). The rest, about 4.5 square kilometers (1.75 square miles), is water. This means about 5.47% of the town is covered by water.
Neighboring Areas
The western border of Aurelius is along Cayuga Lake. This is one of the large lakes known as the Finger Lakes. To the east, the town borders the city of Auburn.
To the north, Aurelius is next to the towns of Montezuma and Throop. To the south, it borders the towns of Springport and Fleming.
Major Roads
Several important roads pass through Aurelius. US 20 and NY 5 are major highways that run east and west.
New York State Route 90 is another important road. It runs north and south along the shore of Cayuga Lake. New York State Route 326 crosses the southeastern part of the town.

- Half Acre – A small community east of Aurelius and west of Auburn. It is on NY-326 and was once known as Hell's Half Acre. It is near the Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES Center.
- Mud Lock – This is a dam and a canal lock on the Cayuga–Seneca Canal. It is at the northern end of Cayuga Lake, in the northwestern part of the town on NY-90. This canal system connects the Finger Lakes to the Erie Canal.
- Relius – A small community located west of Auburn and east of Cayuga. This is where the Town Hall, Court, and Highway Department are located. It used to be a train stop on what is now the Finger Lakes Railway.
