Fleming is a town in Cayuga County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 2,475 people lived there. The town is named after General George Fleming, who was one of the first people to settle in the area. Fleming is located at the northern end of Owasco Lake, just south of the city of Auburn.

History of Fleming

People first settled in the area that is now Fleming around 1790. The town of Fleming was officially created in 1823. It was formed from a part of another town called Aurelius.

Geography of Fleming

Fleming is located in the southern part of Cayuga County. It borders the city of Auburn to the north. Auburn is the main city and county seat for Cayuga County.

The total area of Fleming is about 62.9 square kilometers (24.3 square miles). Most of this area, about 56.5 square kilometers (21.8 square miles), is land. The rest, about 6.4 square kilometers (2.5 square miles), is water. This means about 10% of Fleming is covered by water.

The eastern border of the town is along Owasco Lake. This lake is one of the famous Finger Lakes in New York.

Roads and Highways in Fleming

Several important roads run through Fleming. New York State Route 34 and New York State Route 38 are highways that go from north to south. NY-38 runs along the shore of Owasco Lake. NY-34 meets with New York State Route 34B in the southern part of Fleming. A small section of New York State Route 326 also crosses the northwest corner of the town.

  • William H. Carpenter (1821–1885) – He was the postmaster in Fleming in the 1850s. Later, he became a U.S. Consul in China from 1861 to 1865.
  • Susan Ann Edson (1823-1897) – She was a doctor who served as the personal physician to President James A. Garfield.
