How the Finger Lakes Were Formed
Glaciers Carved the Land
Long, long ago, during the last Ice Age, huge sheets of ice called glaciers covered much of North America. These glaciers were incredibly powerful. As they slowly moved across the land, they acted like giant bulldozers. They scraped away soil and rock, carving out deep valleys in the landscape.
A Look Back in Time
When the climate warmed up, these massive glaciers began to melt. The meltwater filled the long, narrow valleys that the ice had carved. This is how the Finger Lakes were created! Their unique shape is a direct result of this ancient glacial activity. The deep valleys and the north-to-south direction of the lakes show the path the glaciers took.
