About Canadice Lake
Canadice Lake is about 3 miles (4.8 km) long. At its widest point, it is 0.3 miles (0.48 km) across. The lake covers an area of 649 acres (2.63 km²). Its deepest point is 95 feet (29 meters). The shoreline around the lake stretches for 6.5 miles (10.5 km).
Protecting the Water
This lake is an important source of drinking water for the city of Rochester, New York. To keep the water clean and safe, there are special rules. For example, no houses are allowed to be built along the lake's shore.
Boats on the lake must be 17 feet (5.2 meters) long or less. Their engines also cannot be more than 10 horsepower. These rules help protect the water quality.
Swimming, camping, and anything that could pollute the water are not allowed. In the past, you needed a free permit to fish or boat on the lake. However, this permit system has now stopped. You no longer need a permit to enjoy these activities.
Fun Activities at Canadice Lake
Canadice Lake is a great place for fishing. You can find several types of trout here. These include lake trout, brown trout, and rainbow trout.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation helps keep the lake full of fish. They regularly add these three types of trout to the lake. This process is called stocking. Sometimes, they also stock landlocked Atlantic salmon.
Boat Launches
If you want to bring a boat, there are a couple of places to launch it. On the east side of the lake, there is a gravel boat ramp. This ramp is not paved, but it works well for launching boats. At the south end of the lake, there is a special launch area for smaller boats. This is often called a "cartop launch." It is perfect for canoes, kayaks, or small boats that can be carried on top of a car.
