Horace Speed's Baseball Career
Starting with the Giants
Horace Speed was chosen by the San Francisco Giants in 1969. This happened during the third round of the 1969 MLB Draft. He made his first appearance in a major league game in 1975. He played for the Giants.
In his first game, he was a pinch runner for catcher Dave Rader. A pinch runner is a player who enters the game to run the bases for another player. The Giants won that game against the San Diego Padres with a score of 2–0.
Playing for the Indians
On December 7, 1977, Speed joined the Cleveland Indians. He signed with them as a free agent. A free agent is a player who is not under contract with any team. They can sign with any team they choose.
The year 1978 was his best season in Major League Baseball. He played in 70 games for the Indians that year. His final game in the major leagues was in 1979. He was a pinch runner again, this time for Cliff Johnson. The Cleveland Indians lost that game 4–3 to the Baltimore Orioles.
