Old Horse Springs is a small, unincorporated community in Catron County, New Mexico. This means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It's located about 20 miles northeast of Aragon and 20 miles west of Datil. To the west of Old Horse Springs, you'll find the Continental Divide, which is like a big mountain range that separates rivers flowing to different oceans. South of there are the Plains of San Agustin.

History of Old Horse Springs

Old Horse Springs once had its own post office. This post office was open for a short time, from 1879 to 1882.

How Old Horse Springs Got Its Name

The community got its interesting name from a story about soldiers. These soldiers were traveling between two places called Fort Tularosa and Socorro. During their journey, one of their horses went missing. They later found the horse at some natural hot springs. These springs were located about half a mile west of where the settlement is today.

Old Horse Springs vs. New Horse Springs

The original community, which is what we now call Old Horse Springs, is actually two miles west of a newer place called New Horse Springs. This means there are two places with similar names in the area!
