Horseshoe Harbor is a small bay located in Larchmont, a village in Westchester County, New York. It sits on the northern shore of Long Island Sound. This little cove is shaped a bit like a horseshoe, which is how it got its name!
What is Horseshoe Harbor?
Horseshoe Harbor is a calm, sheltered area of water. It's found just to the west of Larchmont Harbor. People often use this bay as a safe spot for small boats to anchor or to start their trips out onto the water.
When boats enter Horseshoe Harbor, the water is deeper on the eastern side. This makes it easier for boats to come and go. On the other hand, the northwest part of the bay can become dry land when the tide is low. This means you might see mudflats or sand there at certain times of the day.
There is a rock near the entrance of the harbor, on the western side. This rock can be seen when the water level is low. To keep boats safe, it is marked with a special buoy called a "spindle with can." This marker helps boaters know where the rock is so they can avoid it.
