Hosororo is a community located in the Barima-Waini region of northern Guyana. It sits on the west bank of the Aruka River. This village is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the river's mouth. It is also just three miles away from the town of Mabaruma.
What Hosororo is Known For
Hosororo is famous for growing organic cocoa. Organic means it is grown without certain chemicals. The village also has a special center. This center is a nursery and propagation center. Here, new plants are grown and helped to spread.
A Glimpse into History
The Arawak people began settling in the Hosororo area a very long time ago. This was about 3,500 years ago. The village is known for its rich and fertile soil. It is also the earliest known place where cassava was grown by Amerindians in Guyana. In 2016, Hosororo became part of the nearby town of Mabaruma.
Artistic Inspiration
Aubrey Williams was a famous painter. He was known for his abstract expressionist art. He lived in Hosororo for a time. He was sent there because he supported sugar farmers. While living in Hosororo, he found inspiration. He was greatly influenced by the art and culture of the Amerindian people he met there.
