Hoss's Family Steak and Sea, often just called Hoss's, is a popular restaurant chain that started in Duncansville, Pennsylvania. As of 2022, you can find 29 Hoss's restaurants in Pennsylvania and one in West Virginia. Hoss's is a big part of the local community. They have even hosted fun events like a Toys for Tots charity drive and a classic car show. They also take part in farm shows in Pennsylvania.
The Story of Hoss's
Hoss's Steak and Sea House was started in 1983 by Willard E. "Bill" Campbell. The very first restaurant opened in DuBois, Pennsylvania. Today, Bill Campbell is still in charge as the Chairman and CEO of Hoss's. His son, Craig, helps with planning and growing the company. Bill's wife, Nancy, worked for the company for 24 years, handling public relations.
In 1998, Hoss's even helped build a new bathroom and storage building in Delmont, Pennsylvania. They did this through a construction company they owned.
Awards and Challenges
In 2008, Hoss's was named one of the "Best Places to Work in PA." This was the second year in a row they received this award, and the fourth time overall!
In 2011, a Hoss's restaurant in Hummelstown faced a big challenge. It was damaged by Tropical Storm Lee. The restaurant was flooded with over six feet of water and had to close for eight months.
In March 2013, Hoss's was recognized as the "2013 Chain Operator" by the Beef Checkoff Program. This award celebrates restaurants that do a great job with beef. In May 2014, Hoss's tried to get May 31 named "National Steak Day" by starting a petition, but they didn't get enough signatures.
Restaurant Design
Hoss's restaurants are known for their unique decorations. Their walls are covered with old American newspapers, photos, and other interesting objects. Many of these items are local to the area where the restaurant is. For example, one restaurant might have the front page of an Erie newspaper from 1945, showing the news about Victory over Japan Day. The original look of the restaurants was designed by Donald R. Langer.
