Hot Sam Pretzels was an American restaurant chain. It was famous for selling delicious soft pretzels.
The first Hot Sam store opened in 1966. It was located at the Livonia Mall in Michigan. This mall was in a suburb of Detroit.
The Story of Hot Sam
Julius Young was the person who started Hot Sam Pretzels. He opened the very first store.
In 1971, the company was sold. New owners bought Hot Sam from Julius Young. The new owner was a company called General Host. General Host also owned another store chain. This was Frank's Nursery & Crafts, based in Detroit.
General Host later sold Hot Sam again in 1986.
Hot Sam Joins Mrs. Fields
Mrs. Fields is a well-known company. They bought the Hot Sam chain in 1995.
A year later, in 1996, Mrs. Fields also bought another pretzel company. This company was called Pretzel Time.
Mrs. Fields decided to combine the two pretzel chains. They merged Hot Sam stores into the "Pretzel Time" brand. The last 10 Hot Sam locations were changed in 2005. They all became Pretzel Time stores.
Hot Sam in Pop Culture
Hot Sam Pretzels made a special appearance on TV. It was recreated for the popular Netflix series Stranger Things.
The show is set in the mid-1980s. Hot Sam was shown in a mall food court scene. This scene was filmed at Gwinnett Place Mall. This mall is near Atlanta, Georgia. The show uses this mall for its filming.
