The Hoteo River is a river found in the Auckland Region of New Zealand. It flows towards the southwest from where it begins near the east coast of the Northland Peninsula. The river then empties into the southern part of the Kaipara Harbour.
About the Hoteo River
The Hoteo River is about 28 kilometers (17 miles) long. It is an important waterway for the local area. The river's water eventually flows into the large Kaipara Harbour.
Where the River Starts
The Hoteo River actually begins as a smaller stream called the Waitapu Stream. This stream starts very close to New Zealand's East Coast. The Hoteo River itself forms when two other streams, the Whangaripo and Waiwhiu streams, join together. This joining point is called a confluence.
River Activities
The lower parts of the Hoteo River are popular for fun activities. Many people enjoy whitebaiting here. Whitebaiting is a special type of fishing where people catch tiny, young fish called whitebait. The river is also a great spot for regular fishing.
Every year, the Hoteo River hosts a fun event called the Hoteo River Raft Race. This is a lively competition where teams build and race rafts down the river. It's known for being an exciting and competitive event.
River Crossings
Important roads and railways cross the Hoteo River. State Highway 1, a major road in New Zealand, crosses the river near a place called Wayby. This is south of the town of Wellsford.
Another main road, State Highway 16, crosses the river closer to where it flows into the Kaipara Harbour, near Mangakura. The North Auckland Rail Line, which is a railway track, also crosses the Hoteo River three times within a short distance. These crossings are located north of Kaipara Flats.
