Houston Person (born November 10, 1934) is a famous American jazz musician. He plays the tenor saxophone and also works as a record producer, helping to create music albums. While he has played different styles like hard bop and swing, he is most known for his work in soul jazz. He received a special honor called the "Eubie Blake Jazz Award" in 1982.
Biography
Houston Person grew up in Florence, South Carolina. He first learned to play the piano before he switched to the tenor saxophone. He studied music at South Carolina State College. In 1999, he was honored by being added to the school's Hall of Fame.
When he was in the United States Air Force, he joined a special band. This band was stationed in West Germany. While there, he played music with other talented musicians like Don Ellis, Eddie Harris, Cedar Walton, and Leo Wright. After his time in the Air Force, Person continued his music studies at Hartt College of Music in Hartford, Connecticut.
He first became well-known in the 1960s. This was because of a series of albums he made for Prestige. Many people thought he was married to the singer Etta Jones, but they were not. Instead, they were very close musical partners for many years. They recorded, performed, and toured together. For a long time, this musical partnership was what he was most famous for. They first met when they were both playing in organist Johnny Hammond's band.
Houston Person has recorded more than 75 albums where he was the bandleader. These albums were released on different record labels like Prestige, Westbound, Mercury, Savoy, and Muse. More recently, he has been recording with HighNote. He has also played with many other great musicians, including Charles Brown, Ron Carter, Bill Charlap, Lena Horne, Lou Rawls, Horace Silver, and Dakota Staton.
Houston Person has lived in Newark, New Jersey for many years.

Awards and Recognition
Houston Person has received several important awards for his music. In 1982, he was given the "Eubie Blake Jazz Award." Later, in 2011, he received the "Jazz Legend Award" during a ceremony in San Diego. These awards celebrate his long and successful career in jazz music.
