The Story of How

The town of How was officially started in 1875. Before that, in 1872, it was separated from the city of Shawano. By 1878, it became a full town within Oconto County.

A post office served the town from 1879 until 1905. The town got its name from Calvin F. How, Jr. He was an important person in the insurance and banking world.

How covers a total area of about 35.1 square miles (90.8 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 34.9 square miles (90.5 square kilometers), is land. Only a small part, 0.1 square miles (0.3 square kilometers), is water.

The community of Hayes is found within the town of How. Hayes was named after Hayes Creek, a stream that flows west of the community. The creek itself was named after an early logger in the area.

In the 1890s, Hayes was a busy place. It had two hotels, several saloons, a general store, a barber shop, and even a photography studio. Today, it is mostly abandoned, with only a few old houses and storefronts remaining from the 1900s.
