Howard Griffith is a former American football player. He played as a fullback in the National Football League (NFL) for 11 seasons. He was born on November 17, 1968.

Early Life and High School Football

Howard Griffith grew up in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Julian High School. While playing there, he was a top performer. He earned "All-City" honors for his skills.

College Football Career

Howard played college football for the University of Illinois. He set an amazing NCAA record during his time there. In one game on September 22, 1990, he scored eight touchdowns! This was against Southern Illinois University. Illinois won that game with a score of 56–21.

Playing in the NFL

Howard Griffith was chosen in the ninth round of the 1991 NFL draft. The Indianapolis Colts picked him first. However, he did not play any regular games for them. His NFL debut was with the Los Angeles Rams in 1993. He played two seasons with the Rams. After that, he joined the Carolina Panthers for two seasons. He was picked by them in the 1995 NFL Expansion Draft.

Winning Super Bowls with the Broncos

In 1997, Griffith joined the Denver Broncos. He played five seasons with this team. His main job was to block for star running back Terrell Davis. He helped Davis gain many yards. Griffith did not run with the ball very often. But he was good at catching passes from the backfield. He had 27 catches in 1996 and 26 in 1999.

With the Broncos, Howard Griffith won two Super Bowl rings. These were Super Bowl XXXII and Super Bowl XXXIII. He was a big part of the Super Bowl XXXIII win. In that game, he scored two rushing touchdowns. He also made a key 23-yard catch in Super Bowl XXXII. This play helped set up Denver's final touchdown. While playing for the Broncos, he earned the nickname "The Human Plow." This was because of his strong blocking.

Retirement from Football

Howard Griffith retired from the NFL in 2002. He had a neck injury during the 2001 preseason. This injury caused him to miss the entire 2001 season. Over his 11 NFL seasons, he had 351 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He also had 122 catches for 844 yards and nine touchdowns.

Life After Football

Today, Howard Griffith works as a football analyst. He is a lead analyst for the Big Ten Network. He shares his thoughts on Big Ten football every week. In 2005, he also worked as an analyst for the NFL and NFL Europe. He commentated games for Fox and the NFL Networks. Howard Griffith is also an author. He wrote a book in 2001 called Laying it on the Line.

His son, Houston, decided to play football at the Notre Dame in 2018.
