History of Howards Grove

The village got its name from H. B. Howard. He was a hotel owner and also the local postmaster. Howards Grove started as two separate small communities. These were called Millersville and Howards Grove.

In 1967, these two communities joined together. They formed one village with a very long name: Howards Grove–Millersville. Later, in 1972, people voted to shorten the name. That's how it became simply Howards Grove.

The first settlers arrived in this area in 1846. They made their homes in the wild land nearby. This area was known as the town of Herman. For supplies, they traveled ten miles to Sheboygan.

Since the 1840s, farming has been the main job here. Farmers first grew crops like oats and wheat. But by 1899, things began to change. People started focusing more on dairy farming. Today, farming is still a very important part of the community.
