History of Howey-in-the-Hills
The town of Howey-in-the-Hills was started by William John Howey. He was a person who grew citrus fruits and also developed land.
On May 8, 1925, the town was officially formed. It was first called the Town of Howey. Two years later, in 1927, its name was changed. The new name, Town of Howey-in-the-Hills, shows that the town is located among rolling hills.
Did you know that the very first factory in Florida to make citrus juice was built here? William John Howey built it in 1921.
Geography of Howey-in-the-Hills
Howey-in-the-Hills is located in the middle of Lake County, Florida. You can find it on the western side of Little Lake Harris. This lake is connected to a bigger lake called Lake Harris.
The town is next to a community called Yalaha to the northwest. Florida State Road 19 goes through the town. People living there know it as Palm Avenue.
This road goes north for about 8 miles to Tavares. Tavares is the main city for Lake County. If you go south on State Road 19, you will reach Groveland in about 13 miles.
The total area of Howey-in-the-Hills is about 3.67 square miles (9.5 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, about 3.16 square miles (8.19 square kilometers). The rest, about 0.51 square miles (1.32 square kilometers), is water.
