The commune covers a large area of about 2,787.7 square kilometers. Most people in Hualaihué live in rural areas, which are like the countryside. About 5,867 people (70.9%) lived in rural areas. The rest, 2,406 people (29.1%), lived in urban areas, which are towns or cities. Between 1992 and 2002, the population of Hualaihué grew by a small amount, adding 169 more people.

How Hualaihué is Governed

Local Government Structure

Hualaihué is managed by a local government called a municipal council. This council helps make decisions for the commune. The leader of the council is called an alcalde. Think of an alcalde like a mayor for the commune.

The Alcalde's Role

The alcalde is chosen directly by the people of Hualaihué through an election. They serve for four years. From 2008 to 2012, the alcalde was Freddy Ibacache Muñoz, who belonged to the PPD political party. The alcalde and the council work together to make sure the commune runs smoothly and serves its residents.
