Hualaihué (pronounced wah-lah-WAY) is a special type of area in Chile called a commune. It is located in the Palena Province, which is part of the Los Lagos Region. The main town and capital of Hualaihué is called Hornopirén.

According to a census taken in 2002, Hualaihué had 8,273 people living there. A census is like a big count of everyone in a country or area. Out of these people, 4,457 were men and 3,816 were women.
The commune covers a large area of about 2,787.7 square kilometers. Most people in Hualaihué live in rural areas, which are like the countryside. About 5,867 people (70.9%) lived in rural areas. From 2008 to 2012, the alcalde was Freddy Ibacache Muñoz, who belonged to the PPD political party. The alcalde and the council work together to make sure the commune runs smoothly and serves its residents.
