Hualpén (pronounced wal-PEN) is a city and commune in Chile. It is located in the Biobío Region, within Concepción Province. Hualpén is part of a larger group of cities called Greater Concepción. The commune covers an area of about 53.5 square kilometers.

Hualpén's Population and People

A census in 2002 counted 86,722 people living in Hualpén. Most of these people, about 99.1%, lived in city areas. Only a small number, about 0.9%, lived in rural areas. Between 1992 and 2002, the population of Hualpén decreased by about 5.7%.

How Hualpén is Governed

As a commune, Hualpén is a local area with its own government. It is managed by a municipal council. This council is led by an alcalde, which is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen directly by the people every four years. The current alcalde is Katherine Torres Machuca.

Hualpén's Representatives in Government

Hualpén is part of Chile's electoral system.

  • In the Chamber of Deputies, Hualpén is represented by two people. These are Jorge Ulloa and Cristián Campos. They represent the 43rd electoral district, which also includes Talcahuano.
  • In the Senate, Hualpén is represented by Alejandro Navarro Brain and Hosain Sabag Castillo. They are part of the 12th senatorial constituency.
