Huaquillas is a lively town in western El Oro, Ecuador. It's special because it sits right on the border with Peru. Huaquillas is also the main town, or "canton seat," of the Huaquillas Canton.
A big international bridge crosses the Zarumilla River here. This bridge connects Huaquillas with the Peruvian town of Aguas Verdes. Both towns are very busy with lots of buying and selling. You'll see many sellers, both in shops and on the streets. They sell goods using both US dollars, which is the money used in Ecuador, and Peruvian soles, the money used in Peru.
History of Huaquillas
Huaquillas has an interesting history, especially because of its location. In 1941, during a conflict between Ecuador and Peru, the town was briefly taken over by Peruvian forces. This event is an important part of the town's past.
