Aguas Verdes means "green waters." It is a small town in northwestern Peru. This town is part of the Zarumilla Province in the Tumbes Region. In 1999, about 2,390 people lived there. Aguas Verdes is also the main town of the Aguas Verdes District.

A Town on the Border

Aguas Verdes sits right on the border with Ecuador. An international bridge crosses the Zarumilla River here. This bridge connects Aguas Verdes with a town in Ecuador called Huaquillas.

Busy Border Trade

Both Aguas Verdes and Huaquillas are very busy places. They have a lot of trade happening every day. You will see many sellers, both in shops and on the streets. They sell all kinds of goods. People can pay using Peruvian soles or US dollars. The US dollar is the only money used in Ecuador.

Easy Travel Between Countries

There is a special agreement for people to travel easily. People from Peru and Ecuador can cross the border freely. They do not need to stop at a main border check right away. The official immigration checks are located a bit further inside each country.

Getting to Aguas Verdes

Aguas Verdes is about 27 kilometers (about 17 miles) northeast of Tumbes. Tumbes is the capital city of the region. Aguas Verdes can be a bit crowded and busy. It is often a good idea to take a taxi if you visit. This makes getting around easier.

Pan-American Highway Connection

The northern end of the Pan-American Highway is in Aguas Verdes. This highway is the longest road in Peru. It connects many countries in the Americas. Its starting point in Peru is right at this border crossing.
