Huberia is a special group, or genus, of ants. These ants belong to a larger family called Myrmicinae, which is a type of ant. What makes Huberia ants unique is that they are endemic to New Zealand. This means you can only find them living naturally in New Zealand and nowhere else in the world! There are only two known kinds, or species, of Huberia ants.

What are Huberia Ants?
Huberia ants are tiny insects that live in colonies. Like all ants, they are social creatures. This means they live together in large groups and work as a team. Each ant in the colony has a special job.
These ants are part of the Formicidae family, which includes all ants. They are also in the Myrmicinae subfamily. This group is known for having ants with a special two-part "waist" between their chest and abdomen.
Where Do Huberia Ants Live?
Huberia ants are found only in New Zealand. They live in different habitats across the islands. You might find them in forests, grasslands, or even gardens. They often build their nests underground or in rotten wood.
Being endemic means they are a unique part of New Zealand's wildlife. They have adapted to the local environment over a very long time. This makes them an important part of the country's natural heritage.
Life in an Ant Colony
Ants, including Huberia ants, live in highly organized societies. A typical colony has three main types of ants:
- Queen: The queen ant is usually the largest ant in the colony. Her main job is to lay eggs. She is the mother of almost all the ants in the colony.
- Workers: These are female ants that cannot reproduce. They do most of the work in the colony. Worker ants search for food, build and clean the nest, and care for the young.
- Males: Male ants have wings and their main job is to mate with new queens. They usually live for a short time.
Ants communicate using special chemicals called pheromones. They also use touch and vibrations. This helps them work together to find food and protect their home.
What Do Huberia Ants Eat?
Most ants are omnivores. This means they eat a variety of foods. They might eat small insects, seeds, or sweet liquids like honeydew from aphids. Worker ants go out to find food and bring it back to the nest. They share it with the queen and the young ants.
Species
There are two known species of Huberia ants:
- Huberia brounii Forel, 1895
- Huberia striata (Smith, 1876)
Scientists study these species to learn more about their lives. They look at their behavior, where they live, and how they are related to other ants. Protecting their habitats is important to make sure these unique New Zealand ants continue to thrive.
