History of Hudson, Florida
Early Days and Growth
In 1878, a man named Isaac Hudson moved his family to the quiet coastal area of Pasco County. He even let a post office be set up in his home. This was the start of the community.
In the early 1900s, Hudson began to grow. A company called Fivay started cutting down trees for lumber. They shipped the lumber by train to Tampa. This brought more people and jobs to Hudson.
Changes Over Time
However, when the Fivay Company closed in 1912, Hudson's growth slowed down. Many people started working in fishing and shrimping. These jobs supported about half of the working men from the 1930s to the 1950s.
In 1950, W.L. Hendry and his sons started a new project. They dug canals from the coast near Hudson Springs. They used the dirt from digging to create higher land. This new land was used to build houses, forming the "Port of Hudson" neighborhood.
By the 1980s, more homes, including many mobile homes, were built along these canals. Today, the older waterfront areas are getting a new look. Also, many new housing developments are being built further inland.
Local Healthcare
Hudson is home to Bayonet Point Hospital. It opened in 1981 and was the first hospital in North West Pasco County. It serves people in Pasco, Hernando, and Citrus counties.
