Hubert Henry Barr (born on May 17, 1935), known as Hugh Barr, is a former footballer from Northern Ireland. He played as a forward, which means he was a player who mainly tried to score goals. Hugh Barr played both professionally and for his country.
Early Life and Education
Hugh Barr was born in Ballymena, a town in Northern Ireland. He went on to study at Queen's University Belfast.
Football Career
Hugh Barr had a long and interesting football career. He played for many different clubs and also represented his country.
Playing for Clubs
Barr started playing football with youth teams like Wellington Street Boys' Brigade and Harryville Amateurs. He then joined Ballyclare Comrades. As he got older, he played for several well-known clubs. These included Cliftonville, Loughborough College, and Everton.
He also played for Coleraine, Ballymena United, and Linfield. While at Linfield, he scored many goals, which made other teams notice him. Coventry City, a team in Division 3, signed him. Their manager, Jimmy Hill, was very keen to get him. After Coventry City, he played for Cambridge United. Later in his career, he became a player-manager at Ely City. A player-manager is someone who plays for the team and also manages it.
Playing for His Country
Hugh Barr also played football for Northern Ireland at different levels. He played for the Northern Ireland amateur team. He also represented the Northern Ireland B team. The "B" team is often a step below the main national team.
He also played for the main Northern Ireland national team. When a player plays for their country, it's called being "capped." Barr was a member of the Great Britain squad for the 1960 Summer Olympics. Even though he was part of the team, he did not play in any matches during that tournament.
