Hugh Geoghegan (born 16 May 1938 – died 7 July 2024) was an important Irish judge. He served on the Supreme Court from 2000 to 2010. Before that, he was a judge on the High Court from 1992 to 2000.
Early Life and Education
Hugh Geoghegan was born on 16 May 1938. His father, James Geoghegan, was also a judge on the Supreme Court. Hugh went to secondary school at Clongowes Wood College.
He then studied at University College Dublin (UCD). There, he earned degrees in law. From 1960 to 1961, he was the leader of the UCD Law Society. After UCD, he studied at the King's Inns to become a barrister. A barrister is a type of lawyer who argues cases in court.
A Career in Law
Hugh Geoghegan became a barrister in 1962. This meant he could represent people in court. In 1977, he became a senior counsel. This is a special title for experienced barristers. He worked in Dublin and the Midland area of Ireland.
He also had permission to work as a barrister in Northern Ireland and in England and Wales. From 1982 to 1992, he worked as a Public Service Arbitrator. This role involved helping to settle disagreements in public services. He also helped create rules for the Circuit Court.
He was part of an investigation into the Stardust fire. This was a very serious fire that happened in 1981. He also led a group that suggested creating the Labour Relations Commission. This group helps solve problems between workers and employers.
Becoming a Judge
Hugh Geoghegan became a judge of the High Court in December 1992. The High Court deals with serious legal cases. In 2000, he was promoted to the Supreme Court of Ireland. This is the highest court in Ireland. He took over from another judge, Donal Barrington.
He officially started his role on the Supreme Court on 7 March 2000. He retired from being a judge in May 2010. After he retired, he helped with citizenship ceremonies. These are events where people officially become Irish citizens.
Family Life
Hugh Geoghegan was married to Mary Finlay Geoghegan. She was also a judge on the Supreme Court. They had two daughters and one son. Their son, James Geoghegan, became the Lord Mayor of Dublin shortly before his father passed away.
Hugh Geoghegan passed away on 7 July 2024. He was 86 years old.
