Hugh MacNeil (born 26 October 1860 – died 14 September 1924) was a talented New Zealander. He was known for his skills in cricket and golf. He was also a successful businessman.

Early Life and Career

Hugh MacNeil was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1860. He was the second son of his parents. When he was five years old, his family moved to Dunedin, New Zealand, in 1865.

He went to school at Otago Boys' High School. Later, he attended Christ's College, Christchurch. Hugh followed in his father's footsteps in business. He worked for a company his father started. Eventually, Hugh became a top director for the company in Australia and New Zealand. He married Ellie Rutherford in Sydney in November 1884.

Cricket Achievements

Hugh MacNeil played eight important cricket matches, known as first-class games. He played for the Otago team between 1877 and 1894.

Top Scores and Wickets

In one match in 1882-83, he scored his highest points. He made 58 runs and then 24 runs against the Canterbury team. He also took four wickets in that game.

He showed his bowling talent in 1883-84. He took 6 wickets for only 25 runs against the Tasmanian team. This helped his team win the match.

Playing Against Australia

MacNeil also played well in special matches against touring Australian teams. In these games, Otago had 22 players against Australia's 11.

When he was just 17, in 1877-78, he scored the most runs in a low-scoring game. He did it again in 1880-81, scoring 44 runs. In that same match, he also took 5 wickets for 28 runs. For his great performance, he won a special trophy.

Golf Success

Hugh MacNeil was also a champion golfer. He won the New Zealand Amateur golf championship in 1894. He was also the runner-up in 1896 and 1900.

Australian Golf Titles

After moving to Australia, he continued his winning streak. He won the New South Wales Amateur Championship in 1898 and 1899. In 1902, he became the champion of the Australian Amateur tournament. Because of how the tournaments were set up, he also became the Victorian Amateur Champion that same year. He played for New South Wales in team matches in 1904, 1905, and 1908. He was a special lifetime member of the Royal Sydney Golf Club.

Later Life and Passing

Hugh MacNeil had been unwell for some time. He traveled to Queensland, hoping the warmer weather would help him feel better. Sadly, he passed away in Townsville in 1924. He had been retired from work for several years.

Hugh and his wife had two daughters and two sons.
