Hugh Molloy (born September 25, 1841 – died March 8, 1922) was a brave sailor in the United States Navy. He received the Medal of Honor, which is America's highest award for military bravery. He earned this special award for his actions during the American Civil War.
A Brave Sailor in the Civil War
Hugh Molloy was an Ordinary Seaman, which is a rank for a sailor, on a ship called the USS Fort Hindman (1862). He served during the American Civil War, a big conflict in American history.
Earning the Medal of Honor
On March 2, 1864, Hugh Molloy showed incredible bravery. His ship, the USS Fort Hindman, was in a fight near Harrisonburg, Louisiana. They were up against a group of Confederate soldiers who had powerful cannons, called an artillery battery. Because of his courageous actions that day, he was awarded the Medal of Honor.
Later Life
Hugh Molloy lived to be 80 years old. He passed away on March 8, 1922. He was laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery in Evanston, Illinois.
