Hugh Rose, the 20th Baron of Kilravock, was an important figure in Scottish history. He lived from 1781 to 1827. Hugh Rose was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Nairnshire. He was also the Chief of Clan Rose, a historic Scottish clan.
Hugh was the oldest son of Hugh Rose of Brea and Broadley and his wife, Elizabeth Rose, Lady of Kilravock. When his mother passed away in 1815, he inherited her lands and became the new Clan Chief.
Early Life and Family History
Hugh Rose was born at Kilravock Castle in Scotland. His mother was Elizabeth Rose, the 19th Baroness of Kilravock. Sadly, his father died three months before Hugh was born.
Even though Hugh had an older half-brother named James from his father's side, Hugh was the heir to Kilravock Castle. He also became the Chief of Clan Rose through his mother's family line.
At first, his half-brother's guardian questioned if Hugh was the rightful heir. They believed James should inherit because their father was a grandson of an earlier Baron of Kilravock. However, the House of Lords (a part of the UK Parliament) decided in favor of Hugh's mother, Elizabeth Rose, in 1787.
Elizabeth Rose wrote about this challenge to a friend. She explained how she fought to keep the old Highland castle. She wanted to make sure her young son, Hugh, would inherit it and the family's lands. She also wanted to give him a good education.
Military Service
In 1802, Hugh Rose joined the Inverness Militia, which was a local military force. He started as a Major. Later, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.
In 1806, he took on more leadership roles. He was made the Commandant and Colonel of the Nairn Voluntary Infantry. This shows he was a respected leader in his community.
Political Career
On October 28, 1812, Hugh Rose was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Nairnshire. This was a special moment because his great-great-grandfather had also been an MP for Nairnshire in the very first Parliament of Great Britain in 1707.
Hugh Rose did not serve as an MP for very long. He had to resign on June 25, 1813, because he became ill. To help him resign, he was appointed Steward to the Chiltern Hundreds a few days later. This was a special position that allowed MPs to legally step down from their role.
He was also appointed Vice-Lieutenant of Nairnshire. This was another important local position.
Family Life
Hugh Rose married Katherine Baillie on October 5, 1805. She was the daughter of John Baillie of Dunain. Together, they had seven children:
- Hugh Rose, 21st of Kilravock
- Isabella Rose
- Elizabeth Rose
- Margaret Rose
- Katherine Rose
- John Baillie Rose, 22nd of Kilravock (who passed away on September 20, 1854)
Katherine passed away, and Hugh married Catherine Mackintosh of Farr on April 22, 1819. They had eight children together:
- Major James Rose, 23rd of Kilravock (who passed away on March 30, 1909)
- William Rose
- Major Wellington Rose (who passed away on June 19, 1858)
- Alexander Rose
- Major Arthur Rose (who passed away in 1858)
- Anne Rose

Hugh Rose passed away on December 29, 1827, at Kilravock Castle. His oldest son, Hugh, inherited his title and became the next Baron of Kilravock.
