James Rose was an important figure in Scottish history. He was known as the 23rd Baron of Kilravock. Born in 1820, he served as a Major in the British Army in India. Later, he became the Lord Lieutenant of Nairn and the Chief of Clan Rose. He was the third son of Hugh Rose, 20th of Kilravock and Catherine Mackintosh.
Early Life and Family
James Rose was born on March 21, 1820, at Kilravock Castle in Nairnshire, Scotland. His family, the Roses, were very active in politics in the Scottish Highlands. His father, Hugh Rose, was a Member of Parliament for Nairnshire.
His great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather were also Members of Parliament. This shows that the Rose family had a long history of public service. James Rose was also the grandson of Elizabeth Rose, Lady of Kilravock, a well-known writer. He studied in Edinburgh before joining the Addiscombe Military Seminary. After his training, he joined the British Indian Army.
Military and Public Service
As the youngest son, James Rose joined the British Army in India after his father passed away in 1827. He trained at Addiscombe Military Seminary. During his time in the army, he rose to the rank of Major.
In 1854, his older brother, John Baillie Rose, died. James then inherited Kilravock Castle and the title of Baron of Kilravock. At this point, he returned to Scotland from the army. Back in Scotland, he was appointed a Justice of the Peace and a Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Nairn. In 1889, he became the Lord Lieutenant of Nairn, a position he held until 1903.
Family Life
James Rose married twice and had seven children. His first marriage was to Anna Maria Twemlow on January 15, 1850. They had four children together:
- Catherine Isabella Ellen Rose (1859-1945)
- Hugh Rose, 24th of Kilravock (1863-1946), who also became a Lieutenant Colonel.
- John Rose (1866-1896), who was a Captain.
- Elizabeth Margaret Rose (died 1933)
After Anna Maria passed away, James Rose married Eliza Hocking. They had three children together. James Rose passed away on March 30, 1909, at his home, Kilravock Castle, at the age of 89.
