Hugh Rose was born on August 10, 1863, at Kilravock Castle. This historic castle was his family's home in Nairnshire, Scotland. His father was Major James Rose, 23rd of Kilravock, and his mother was Anna Maria Twemlow.

Hugh went to Wellington College, Berkshire, a well-known school. After that, he continued his studies at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. This is a famous place where people train to become officers in the British Army.

A Distinguished Military Career

After finishing his training at Sandhurst, Hugh Rose joined the Black Watch regiment. This was a famous part of the British Army. He served in the Nile Expedition from 1884 to 1885. For his service, he received the Egypt Medal and the Bronze Star.

Later, from 1901 to 1902, he fought in the Second Boer War. He was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal for his efforts. When his father passed away in 1909, Hugh became the 24th Baron of Kilravock and the new Chief of Clan Rose.

Hugh Rose also played a big part in the First World War. He was recognized for his bravery four times during the conflict. In 1916, he received a special honor called the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George. The French government also gave him an award in 1917. By the end of the war, he was a Lieutenant Colonel and led the 1st Battalion of the Black Watch. After the war, he retired and returned to his home at Kilravock Castle.

Family Life

In 1920, Hugh Rose married Ruth Antoinette Guillemard. They had three children together.

Their son, Hugh Rose, was born in 1921. He also joined the Black Watch and fought in the Second World War. Sadly, he lost his life in battle at the Second Battle of El Alamein in 1942.

His daughter, Anna Elizabeth Guillemard Rose, was born in 1924. After her brother's death, she became the next Baroness of Kilravock and inherited Kilravock Castle from her father.

Hugh Rose passed away at Kilravock Castle on February 22, 1946, at the age of 82. Since his son had died before him, his titles and the family estate went to his daughter, Anna.
